Ok, I need you to do two things for me.

First, go watch Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama.
Then, go read this blog post by John Scalzi.

Colin Powell has perhaps the most concise and thoughtful critique of McCain's campaign I've seen to date, with exactly the reasons I would give, if I were a Republican, for why I would vote for Obama.

He also talked about Specialist Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan.

Watching the interview with Powell, I was struck by the fact that Powell had been so impacted by this image, and all that it signified, that he remembered this young soldier and recalled him by name, to mention it in his interview and endorsement.

The other day I had a conversation with a Muslim coworker about a stupid, bigoted and slanderous email forwarded to my work email address by one of our customers, regarding the accusation that Obama was Muslim. I recall saying that 1) This is demonstrably false, and 2) If it was, why should that make a difference? There are as many types of Muslims as there are Christians, with the full spectrum from sanity and goodwill to outright hate and wing-nuttery that comes with ANY belief system.

In short, it shouldn't matter what religion he subscribes to.

That said, I'm seeing so much sloppy thinking, and crass attempts at manipulation of public opinion that people should be smart enough not to fall for. It seems to me, if they're falling for it, it's because either they don't have the mental faculties to critically analyze propaganda, or they are willfully and dangerously deluding themselves into believing this as something slightly more acceptable than saying "I won't vote for no Darkie."

Either way the candidates are so remarkably different in their platforms that you can just vote the issues and don't have to resort to ridiculous reasons like this.

If you can't come up with a coherent reason other than "he seems anti-American" or "I've heard he's secretly a Muslim" you might be a bigot.

Please let me know if this is the case so I can appropriately and thoroughly burn bridges, because I am done with this sort of bullshit.
